Possums Spotted and Spirits High as Pineywoods Possum Walk Kicks Off

ZAVALLA, TEXAS — The first weekend of the Pineywoods Possum Walk launched with excitement and community spirit as locals and visitors hit the trails at Cassels-Boykin Park in search of hidden possums. The event, organized by the Zavalla Prairie Community Connections (ZPCC) nonprofit, officially kicked off Friday and quickly gained momentum, with five possums located along the Yellow Trail by Sunday afternoon.

To keep the fun going through Memorial Day, ZPCC members restocked the trail with fresh possums Sunday evening, ensuring new discoveries for eager participants. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.

“We even had families travel from Houston just to enjoy the walk and take part in the hunt,” said a ZPCC spokesperson. “This is the positive outcome we hope to see from our tourism initiative. Bringing more people to Zavalla benefits the community by generating tax revenue through local spending and increasing awareness of our beautiful town — the Heart of the Lake.”

Local supporter Terry Casey donated the use of his drink trailer for the weekend kickoff, where ZPCC volunteers sold possum-themed drinks and limited edition merchandise. Proceeds and donations from the event go directly toward supporting ongoing community projects — including programs and upkeep for Zavalla’s soon-to-open Community Center.

“This is what it’s all about,” one volunteer shared. “Families, fun, and giving back to make Zavalla shine.”

The Pineywoods Possum Walk continues throughout the month of June. A new trail with freshly hidden possums will be announced each Friday, giving folks plenty of chances to join the fun and win prizes, including a $250 gift card from Chubby’s At The Lake.

ZPCC’s motto says it all: “Amazing Things Happen When People Work Together.” That spirit is alive and well in Zavalla.

Come out, take a walk, find a possum — and be part of something great.
