Zavalla Volunteer Fire Department Awarded Two Grants, Seeks Community Support

by The Zavalla Eagle Staff

The Zavalla Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) has received a significant boost this week, being awarded two grants to enhance its firefighting capabilities. Among the most impactful is a $67,000 grant from the E.L. Kurth Foundation. This funding is specifically designated for the acquisition and outfitting of a new brush truck, a vital resource for combating wildfires in the Pineywoods region.

The grant application process was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Richard Brunk, a former Mayor of Zavalla and a retired paramedic and firefighter who once served with the Zavalla VFD and is now President of the Moffet VFD. Brunk’s extensive experience and commitment to the community played a pivotal role in securing this critical funding. Mr. Brunk has aided the communities of Zavalla, Fuller Springs, Huntington, and Moffett with grant writing in the past year. This has resulted in awards for these communities totaling $309,000 for vehicles and equipment for their fire departments.

“This grant will significantly enhance our ability to serve our community and neighboring areas more effectively”, according to the Facebook post from Zavalla VFD. Zavalla VFD is grateful to the E.L. Kurth Foundation for their generous support, and to Richard Brunk for his dedication to this project.

However, while the grant covers the cost of the new vehicle, additional funding is still needed to outfit the truck with essential firefighting equipment. In response, the Zavalla VFD has launched a series of fundraising efforts, including ongoing raffles. One of the highlights of their fundraising drive is the Mother’s Day Raffle featuring a Luxury Package from Maricela’s Day Spa, valued at $225. Tickets are available for $10 each or three for $25.

In addition, a Father’s Day Raffle is also planned, featuring a Guided Fishing Trip, with tickets also priced at $10 each. All proceeds from these raffles will directly benefit the Zavalla VFD and their efforts to fully outfit the new brush truck.

Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at Coleman’s Gas Station this Saturday Morning, May 10th. Community members can also contact any Zavalla VFD member to buy tickets before the event. Funds raised will be used to ensure the new brush truck is fully equipped and ready to respond to emergencies.

They are also hosting their Annual Benefit Bass Tournament at Cassels-Boykins Pavillion on May 17th. Those wishing to participate still have time to register.

The Zavalla VFD, a volunteer-run organization, relies heavily on community support to maintain its readiness and effectiveness. As the summer fire season approaches, having a fully equipped brush truck is essential for the safety of Zavalla and surrounding areas.

The Zavalla VFD extends its heartfelt thanks to all who have supported their mission and looks forward to seeing the community come together once again this weekend at Coleman’s Gas Station.
